Preferences > Backup > “Enable session snapshot and periodic backup”

I choose this options to keep all unsaved tabs. But, every update this option back to default.

        enable session snapshot

This may be for “safety” reasons as it it judged by some to be unsafe (for your data) to run without the user (you) saving to real, named files on disk.

If it bothers you that this gets changed on you with every update, make a “mental note” to yourself that when you update, you have to go in and re-tick this box.

Of course, this can be jarring if, after an update, and because of this…that your Notepad++ starts up and all your previously unsaved tabs (I’m not calling them “files”, because you didn’t save them as files) are GONE! :)

we need your debug information from ? > debug info... > copy debug info into clipboard.

your notepad++ behaviour on update sounds like things we’ve seen at the unofficial notepad++ releases from e.g. portableapps and the microsoft store.

an official release does not overwrite the config.xml settings file on update.

note: if it would, this would also not happen, as “Enable session snapshot and periodic backup” is the default setting of all official notepad++ releases.

            best regards.

Ah…maybe these releases know more about “safety” than official Notepad++. JUST KIDDING!

When doing the debug info from unofficial Notepad++, does it really admit to being unofficial? ;)

                sort of.

if you know the default locations or location patterns of these releases, you can spot it in a fraction of a second, if you look at the path.

it would not work out though, if a user decides to manually install an official release to C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\NightRise.NotepadWrapped_7.59.32.0_x64__bahp16nyyek9m\ … i would then “autodetect” it as a microsoft store release.
same for C:\PortableApps\Notepad++ of a regular portableapps updater install.
