"Remember Last Used Directory" for Save NEVER WORKS BEYOND THE CURRENT DOCUMENT
-
For two years I’ve been going into the settings and preferences and selecting “Remember Last Used Directory” or the 3rd option for a manual input default-directory.
Every time I try to save a new file it always tries to save to the Notepad++ installation directory. So many time’s I’ve reset the setting. For two years!
Why does the default directory setting only apply to the current document, and not other open document tabs?
Never mind the next instance of opening the program, I can’t even open a new document and get the correct save directory.
If I save a document to the desktop then all the other ones should suggest saving to desktop.
Right?
So why is the installation directory always the suggested as the save directory? – even when I’ve told it to remember the last directory?
Can some one please help rid me of the "Install directory is the save directory"-plague?
If I’m working on 10 files which will save to a different directory, then should’t the “Remember Last Used Directory” setting also apply to the next files and not only the current file?

Are you able to customise NPP at all? For example you can have spaces, tabs and line endings show if you use the “show all characters” which is under View, then show symbols. Set this and load a file to confirm you have a visual representation of these. Space should be a
.
, tab an arrow I think and line endings an inverted character or 2 with CR and LF in them.Once you get that then close NPP, then reopen and repeat to see if the same file shows those characters again.
I suspect you may have a permissions issue with the folder NPP is installed into. Therefore none of your settings will stick if this is the case.

In 7.8.9 and earlier versions as I recall, Remember Last Used Directory works fine for me. However…
or the 3rd option for a manual input default-directory
I have had problems with this one doing oddball things at times, so I don’t use it.
Actually I find the first option (Follow current document) to be, by far, the most useful, but of course YMMV.
For you, you should probably start by considering @Terry-R 's information.

@Terry-R I’m sorry but I don’t know what NPP is.
I did just try to view all characters, typed some stuff. Saw the tab arrows, saw the CRLF (but spaces are still spaces).
Either way, the setting was applied and still present when the Notepad++ was reopened. So that setting stuck. -

Sorry about the confusion. NPP is Notepad Plus Plus, or as you put it Notepad++. Its just a bit quicker to type, its commonly used in this forum.
So that test you did basically seems to confirm that NPP is keeping settings you configure. So why it doesn’t remember the directory is a mystery. Others will also be having a think now you have come back with the first test results.

@Alan-Kilborn THANK YOU. “Follow current document” is working much better. I can now have many document open and they will always suggest the same save directory that I’ve been using.
I guess I was just confused by 3 save directory options. Some how the other two options seemed more like the behavior above; and to me the words “follow the current document” seems to indicate that each document would be separated to it’s own manually-selected save folder.
Some how the words of those settings have me seeing them as the opposite of what they really do.
Why the manually set single directory option (option 3) doesn’t work? I don’t know - but problem solved as far as I’m concerned.
