Can't save an Open File
-
I can’t save file I already have open 7.8.9 32-bit
What the hell, what gives?
Error message
The file is already opened in Notepad ++
Ok, so I go to close it
Do you want to save it
yes
The file is already opened in Notepad ++WHAT?
SO WHAT IF IT’S OPEN, SAVE IT!!!WHO IN THE HELL THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA?!?!?!?!?!
Not to mention I had 120 texts opened that are saved on the disk, today I open notepad ++, all of them are gone from the top horizontal list, only the 2 I edited are still here unsave. I go to save them, I can’t because an error message pops up "The file is already open in Notepad++’ ---- I have never had anything like this happen to me. What are you guys doing over there. Stop tinkering with things that work great god damnit.

Your anger is a bit misdirected I think. Sure 7.8.9 is recent, released 23 July. And if you use NPP constantly you should have received it (updated into your system) early August. So all things considered you have likely been working this version for about a month at least. If that’s true then nothing has changed from a version point of view.
I’d suggest looking elsewhere initially unless you have evidence pointing to the upgrade causing the issue.
Do you run plugin’s? have any of these been recently updated and perhaps that might be the source of the problem? Has the location you load (and save) files to been changed or is no longer accessible.
As a first test suggest running NPP without any plugins, commandline help is available from the
?
menu in NPP. That will show you some options to start testing with.Terry

I’m not running plugins. I haven’t been running the new version. I just reinstalled everything and then the new version of notepad ++. I was probably using the old one. I just installed 6.3 from oldversion.com and it’s working great. 7.8.9 has a bug or someone intentionally made it that way. I understand it’s a new version but you guys got to patch this up. I love notepad ++ and it’s an amazing piece of software, however I’m dealing with very important documents, at least to me and I’m sure so is everyone else while using it, that’s why I’m here to say, please fix this. This brings real uneasiness and an onset of untrustworthiness due to thoughts I might lose my work because of some minor error in programming. Please recheck the code, it happened therefore it’s real and needs to be dealt with. I’ll install the next version you guys put out, but for now I’m sticking with 6.3. I’d like to rollback to a version before this one (7.8.9)—>(7.8.8), but I have no clue where to find a reliable source.
The reason why I never installed the newest version is I kept all my files unsaved in notepad ++ . Every time I would open it they would be there on the top horizontal list. If I updated the program, they would all disappear. It happened before. In a panic I contacted one of your engineers and he helped me locate them sound and safe somewhere in windows. That is why I never used this new version until now.

is the correct location for downloads, lots of recent versions there. Where did you get the “so called buggy” 7.8.9 from?I’d reiterate that it’s unlikely the version’s fault. Possibly there is a corrupt configuration file within it, may have happened as a result of a forced reboot after installing patches (that’s a common theme) and that is NOT a NPP fault, it’s Windows not allowing for apps to shutdown normally. If it was a buggy version lots of others would also be experiencing issues.
In terms of raising a “bug” this forum is NOT the place, it’s on GitHub. Please read through the FAQ section. There is lots of helpful info there on where to look for installers of NPP, how to report bugs, etc. And in terms of reporting a bug you need to be able to reproduce it, as in supply the steps that got you into trouble. If not then it’s unlikely anyone will listen (as in the developers).

Awesome, thanks for the list of the versions.
Unfortunately, I have too much work to reproduce the steps and put them up on github. Thanks for explaining everything but I didn’t install any patches, I don’t even know about patches for notepad++. I just use it as it is out of the box. I’m sure they’ll fix it anyway, maybe other people haven’t been doing the same stuff I have been doing or they don’t actually take the time to go and talk to you guys but it will come up. I just wanted to let you guys know. Thanks for the great program though and your understanding. It is really important that Notepad++ works without any hiccups, so far it did. Once again, tell them to check the code, there is a bug there. They can just try doing what I did which I’m sure they will. I always do whenever I get any remark, it keeps the software ticking right.
Thanks again.
Best regards. -

Your 2 statements (see above) are somewhat contradictory. First you say they are saved on disk then you say they are unsaved. Additionally you say
however I’m dealing with very important documents
and that statement alone should worry you if you are solely relying on NPP to store unsaved files. And that’s not a negative against NPP, it is just plain irresponsible. Regardless of what application you use it’sYOUR
responsibility to look after the files, never leave it to an application. The patches I was referring to are the Windows patches. What can occur (and there are instances on this forum of it occurring for users) is that Windows will reboot after installing patches. It notifies running applications to shutdown as the system will do so in a short time period. However if an application has to wait for the user to respond to a “save” command or similar often the system will shutdown anyways and the data is lost.
I would strongly suggest you visit
https://npp-user-manual.org/docs/preferences/
and look for “Backup”. Some very important info there on settings you should consider if you want to prevent a possible repeat performance. Also if you got the 7.8.9 from Microsoft Store be very aware that it is an “unofficial” version.
Read

about halfway down where another user suffered issues from using the “Microsoft” version.Terry

And no independent backups, right?
Bad ideas, these.
