Notepad++ 7.9.3 RC

@donho was there a good reason?

Hello, @don-ho and All,
Well ! Don, I’ve got a weird error window, below, when launching N++
v7.9.3
Any idea about it ?Oh, my God : I understand : you give up the N++ implementation on
Win XP
systems :-( You’re the naughty boy, Don !!Seriously, Don, may be a more speaking message, like :
Sorry, but, from now on, Notepad++ won't support "Windows XP"
would be welcome ? ( Note the word “Sorry” ! )Right now, I’m saying goodbye to my very old laptop and its outdated system ! Now, I’m in search of modernity… I’ll keep you informed !
Best Regards,

By your “a good reason” I suppose you ask for the reason to drop Windows XP:
The API to customize open/save browsing dialog (#8, #9 & #13) is too new (from Vista) to be supported by XP. -

I wish I could. I’ve tried to detect XP from the very beginning of Notepad++ code to display a warning message and exit Notepad++ gracefully.
The thing is, before entering in Notepad++ code, one of the first things (the effect of using this API I mentioned above) is search the entry point of this API.That’s why I did a prevention in installer. That’s the best thing we can do.

Look at the bright side… that’s a good point :)

Good luck! My personal PC is still on Windows 7 and I do have an old Netbook kicking around with Windows XP I use for old Nintendo emulation - fun to watch my kids play Super Mario Brothers with hand controllers when they’re so used to tilting touch screens on smart phones to play games nowadays.
Your children deserve modern gaming as Notepad++ users deserve modern file browsing dialog interface :)
My work laptop is a beast with Windows 10 and I really like the “interface”. Skipping version of Windows seems the way to go:
XP = good
Vista = bad
Windows 7 = good
Windows 8 = bad
Windows 10 =good
Windows ?next? = ?bad? …I (and the most Windows users) could not agree more with the table you made.

You may want to replace the first change-log item with a more fitting description:
- Discontinued support for Windows XP due to technical reasons. NP++ 7.9.2 is the last version to run on Windows XP.

A little bit long but it’s more clear.
OK, it’ll be in thechange.log
which comes with the new release. -
Could you create an issue in this repository ?
This is not necessary, since old problem with the Admin mode is gone!

Shorter alternative:
- Discontinued support for Windows XP due to technical reasons.
Even shorter, but comes off a little rude:
- Discontinued support for Windows XP.

Yes, of course - but it’s good because “7.9.2 is the last version to run on Windows XP” is said explicitly.
“due to technical reasons” is well said also so people won’t ask why. -

There’s also this new thing: https://github.com/notepad-plus-plus/notepad-plus-plus/blob/master/SUPPORTED_SYSTEM.md

Yes. But once the sentence
Notepad++ 7.9.2 is the last version to run on Windows XP
is in change log of download page, users search with keywords “notepad++” & “XP” will find “Notepad++ 7.9.2 is the last version to run on Windows XP”, which is a direct information.I did
SUPPORTED_SYSTEM.md
because people ask me all the time about Notepad++ OS support table. It will contain more detail information. -
Ok, so the installer indeed shows an error on Windows XP (I had only Russian version):
The updater won’t run on XP as well:
Also, there is a new “No update” dialog with a link that can be added to the changelog:

When using 7.9.3 and a Lexer plugin I wrote, the styling does not work, 7.9.2 works.
With 7.9.3 the lexer is not selected at all, instead the “normal text” lexer is used.
Do you have any idea what changes were made in 7.9.3 that might be worth investigating to understand what is going on? -

Not yet.
Could you pass your lexer plugin URL and example code please ? -

@donho
Damn it, sorry, I 've found it. There is was a hanging 7.9.3 process, once I killed it 7.9.3 behaves the same way as 7.9.2 -

Upgrade Notepad++ License: update GPL version from v2 to v3.
At least in npp.7.9.3.portable.x64.zip, the license.txt still lists GPL version 2.
