Voice recognition software not working with Notepad++ anymore
-
It was working before and it just stopped, and I am not sure why - is there something in latest release that prevents? I have a medical issue where typing is a problem so have been using Nuance Dragon Professional Individual for several months and it has worked great with NP++ until last week.
any ideas? is there config or setting? plug-in?

As far as I know, there is nothing in Notepad++ which caters to voice recognition software, one way or the other.
Voice recognition mostly interfaces with the Operating System, from what I understand, which is supposed to make it work for nearly any apps.
it has worked great with NP++ until last week
What did you change last week? If you updated Notepad++, what version were you at and what version are you at now? Have you tried to run the old version again (you can download the portable copy of the old version).
Or did the voice software update? or did Windows update?

@amy-nugent ,
In addition to what Peter has mentioned, don’t forget the:“Does the software need to update?”. And I hate to do this, but make sure if the mic has a switch, it’s on, or that the mic is being received by the computer. Sometimes a driver update somewhere, or corruption on the disk can also have an effect… but check that the hardware is working with the computer First. Then start looking at conflicts in the hardware if not. Plugging in a new device, etc can send changes through the devices. I used to use that software, back before it advanced to what it supposedly is now and it could be testy at best, most of the time.

@amy-nugent In addition to what the others guys said, it would be good to state whether the VoiceRecog s/w continued working with other programs (browser, old Notepad, etc.). Also, state whether you tried rebooting the computer.

@neil-schipper
yes tried rebooting machine as well both softwares. The VR software works fine in all the other ones I currently use it for.Current version of NP++ is: v8.1.9.3 (64 bit)
Was very odd that is just stopped in NP++. I can force a dialogue box with VR software that will work, since it sounds like might just be a fluke.
Thank you for taking the time to respond.

@lycan-thrope
Thank you for taking time to reply. Mic works fine as VR software works fine with other software. -
@peterjones
thank you for taking time to reply. I will investigate if Windows or Nuance updated. From what I can tell, Nuance has not but Windows possibly because they run automatically in the background. -
Yes, and they just forced another one on us yesterday. That’s twice in less than a month for me. I really hate when they do that. I can tell because my computer starts slowing it’s response to UI actions as the background downloading is occurring.

@amy-nugent Hi. Just a reminder that @peterjones said:
you can download the portable copy of the old version
And even if there was no version change, it’s an easy, quick, no risk experiment to see if the VR plays nice with a portable version; a major charm of portable versions is how little (relatively) they interact with Windows.

@neil-schipper
thanks all - I found a workaround in the VR software (automatic dictation box for this application). Thanks again for all the responses and suggestions. Really, appreciate you all taking time out of your day to respond! :) -
@amy-nugent
Amy, how about sharing that information? We might get another question like this, and it would help to have that information to provide to someone else. :)Lee
