      Notepad++ v8.3.2 (64-bit)
      Build time : Feb 27 2022 - 03:35:46
      Path : D:\Apps\NotePad++\notepad++.exe
      Command Line :
      Admin mode : OFF
      Local Conf mode : OFF
      Cloud Config : OFF
      OS Name : Windows 10 Pro (64-bit)
      OS Version : 2009
      OS Build : 19044.1526
      Current ANSI codepage : 1252
      Plugins : none

      I’ve been running notepad++ for several years without issue. Today it has started going slow and becoming unresponsive.
      I’ve removed all plugins and I still have the issue.
      I’ve opened a plain text file that is around 90MB, normally this would work fine but today it’s not.

      I’ve updated to the latest version to see if that helps, but its not made any difference.
      Can some one point me in the right direction to work out what is happening.

      Thanks

        @jon-may ,

        90Mb isn’t very big. That shouldn’t be causing a slowdown. And with no plugins, it’s obviously not plugins that are causing the problem. Under normal circumstances, I would say nothing should go wrong at this point.

        In which case, I would start looking for the culprit outside of Notepad++: Sometimes, a simple reboot will fix everything. Do you have a virus/malware scanner running? If so, maybe that’s slowing Notepad++. Or maybe you have a virus/malware infecting your system, and that’s slowing Notepad++. Or maybe the file is on a drive that’s slowing down or dying, so the read/write access on that drive is slowing Notepad++. Or maybe the file is on a remote drive with spotty/slow network connection today, or maybe the remote machine is under heavy load today.

        Also, some other users have reported that sometimes the Notepad++ process is maxing out one or more of their CPUs (according to the task manager’s Details tab), again with no obvious reason. But they haven’t been able to to help someone else replicate the problem; and if the problem cannot be replicated, it cannot be solved.

        Sorry I don’t have better news.

          @peterjones Thanks for the reply.
          I’ve been using notepad++ for years without issue.
          My pc has been rebooted but that hasn’t helped.

          The file is on an M.2 SSD which has no errors, notepad++ is on an SSD again with no errors.
          I’ve got an older 32-bit version of NP++ available as a portable app, that opens the file and has no issues.

          It just seems to be the 64-bit version.
          I’ll uninstall it tomorrow and do a fresh install and see if that helps.
          If it doesn’t I’m not sure what to do next.

          Thanks

            @jon-may said in Notepad++ becomes unresponsive:

            I’ll add my 2c worth to the conversation. Given you have a portable 32bit version working well, have rebooted and upgraded, you have just about exhausted all avenues.

            The only other option I can think of is to remove the 64bit version that has the issue, which seems to be your next planned move. You would then need to make sure the Program Files\Notepad++ folder and all below are removed, as well as the %appdata%\notepad++ folder (that’s the default location for the customised settings you have).

            It’s a drastic measure and as a result you will lose all the customisations you have worked to achieve, so consider it carefully before heading down this path. Possibly take screen prints of all of the settings\preference tabs and any other configuration pages you might have loaded/changed before uninstalling. I don’t think it will be a good idea though to save any of the configuration files, as possibly something there might be the reason for your problem.

            Good luck.

            Terry

              Thanks for the reply.

              This is what I’ve done and so far all is working well.
              I’ll see how it goes today when I start using it properly, but so far so good.

              Thanks for the help :)
