notepad.exe keeps running in Task Manager
-
I see C:\Temp\notepad.exe that keeps running even after I kill it in Task Manager.
If I delete C:\Temp\notepad.exe, after a few minutes the file gets re-created.
When I uploaded the file in virustotal.com, it does not report any virus. It reports the file as being: notepad .8.1.2.Installer.x64.exeI ran MalwareBytes scanner, Trend Micro House Call and some other anti-virus, nothing is reporting a virus.
I even ran the C:\Temp\notepad.exe, Windows prompted the “Allow this to make changes”, I pressed yes and it was Notepad++ 8.1.2 installation. I installed it, Notepad++ prompted for a new update, I pressed yes and 8.2.0 was installed.
Has anyone experienced or heard of this, is this a virus?
Does anyone know how I can stop this?Thank you.

As far as I know, Notepad++ doesn’t distribute anything, in the installer or the installed or unzipped version, which calls itself
notepad.exe
(without any ++). I am not convinced that yourc:\temp\notepad.exe
has anything to do with Notepad++. I don’t see how the two can be related. And the v8.1.2 installer would not install v8.2.0. So I have no clue what’s actually going on with your system… only that I don’t think things are actually quite as you’ve described them. -
@peterjones Thanks for your answer.
To clarify, it did install 8.1.2.
I just meant that after I ended up upgrading it to 8.2.0.Anyhow, it is just very strange.
I will keep searching on what is going on. -
@serge-adourian Don’t download NPP from an unofficial site
