TextFX vs TextVIZ

FX seem to be the original, VIZ is based on it and can be found in plugins-admin.

What is the background of these two plugins - which is better / newer / more active? Big difference or only small ones?

We have an entire FAQ on that subject. In short, NppTextViz was originally created to just take a subset of features from TextFX, but it appears that both TextFX and NppTextViz have been abandoned by their authors. Someone took the TextFX codebase and updated it to work with modern Notepad++, but they have never put it in the Plugins Admin, so you have to follow a link from the FAQ to the NppTextFX2 site and manually install it from there.
