Non-existent files (tabs) disappear on program launch
-
When opening NotePad++, any files (as tabs) that were opened, and are no longer available (substituted drive, network path, external drive, etc), simply disappear from the list.
I am not sure if this behavior changed recently, or if I’m just fantasizing that this feature existed before, or that the behavior has changed.If NotePad++ is launched, I would expect all the files to be reopened, and if the active file is no longer existent, NotePad++ would pop-up the usual dialog “Would you like to keep this file open?”
I have recently updated to the latest version, and the problem still persists, and I have searched high and low without finding any other people posting specifically about this.
For comparison, some other editors (like Sublime Text 3) do keep the non-existent files open, but are marked as “unavailable” (and blank) and refresh (as expected) when the file becomes available again.You can easily reproduce this by the following steps:
- Create a substituted drive (same effect as a network drive or external drive), for example using the Subst command (DOS/Windows), e.g. drive “B:”
- Create a file in that path (such as “example.txt”) and open it from “B:” in NotePad++
- Close NotePad++
- Remove the substituted drive (“B:”)
- Reopen NotePad++
And you will see that the previously opened file/tab is completely gone!
Please tell me that I’m crazy (or wrong), or that I have missed a feature/setting (such as the File Status Auto-Detection, or Recent Files History), or that this is actually a feature and not a bug ;-)
Thank you! <3
P.S. I have used NotePad++ for years now, with much pleasure and success and want to express my appreciation and congratulate all the people who have worked on it to create such a wonderful (free!) program! <3

@Terry-R
Thank you so much! <3
I’m not sure why I couldn’t find it (I even checked the issue tracker!)I have checked the code and it seems like a simple fix (as I expected/hoped) since it’s mostly the initial open condition that requires changing:
https://github.com/notepad-plus-plus/notepad-plus-plus/issues/12079#issuecomment-1689310339But I’m not an expert with this language nor with this coding environment and libraries, so I can only contribute a few cents xD (without potentially committing a few crashes)

Your second statement really hammers home how dumb your first statement is.

Even if you are right, this could have been expressed more politely.

I stand by it.
It isn’t a one-off occurrence. Different people say variants of this same thing all the time, not sure why…
Rereading it now…still ultra dumb. -
@Alan-Kilborn
is shooting down people trying to help this program a hobby of yours?
or do you get paid for it?Edit: can someone report this guy?
(i don’t have enough “reputation” points on this forum)
reading his post history shows overly negative tone
shooting down people on a regular basis
which i’m certain does not improve the quality of the product nor its community!
