Help please: /backup folder is empty
-
Hi guys, I need your help.
I am reinstalling the system and now I am going to work under a separate user with the rights of a regular user.
I installed notepad++ on the Admin account, and then opened it on another account where I will work. The program works fine, my session file was imported, I see the application files here: C:\Users…\AppData\Roaming\Notepad++
I configured the autosave and backups plugin in the settings. But the backups subfolder was not created in the program folder and nothing is saved! Help me solve the problem, please! Thank you:) -
@Drew-S ,
You may be confused:
- The
c:\users\...\AppData\Roaming\Notepad++\backup\
directory is where Notepad++ saves copies of unsaved files when you have the session-snapshot+periodic-backup enabled; if you don’t have that option enabled, it won’t create the folder; if you have the option but don’t have any unsaved edits, it will be empty. - the autosave plugin doesn’t make backups, it automatically saves the real file every N minutes – it doesn’t use a “backups” directory; it only works on real files (so the
new #
files won’t be autosaved) (and what features it has depends on whether you are using the old AutoSave v1.61 or new AutoSave v2.00)
I configured the autosave and backups plugin in the settings.
But you don’t tell us what those settings are, so we cannot know if you’ve actually correctly set them up, or just think you have.
Have you read our backup FAQ? Because it describes, in detail, what each of the backup preferences and AutoSave plugin settings do (it has sections on both the old and new AutoSave options).

@PeterJones Thank you for your reply.
Here are the clarifications you asked about:- Autosave is latest version - 2.00
- In the Autosave plugin and in the backup settings almost all the checkboxes are checked, i.e. maximum saves.
- All files in notepad++ are saved and named, not “new #”
Now I see that subfolder “backup” is created, but it’s still empty…

@Drew-S ,
“almost all the checkboxes are checked” – in the Notepad++ settings, some are mutally exclusive (radioboxes, not checkboxes), so we still cannot know what settings you have. Can you do
Alt+PrintScreen
in the Preferences > Backup dialog, and in your AutoSave plugin preferences, and paste those two screenshots in your replyNow I see that subfolder “backup” is created, but it’s still empty…
Which means that either you don’t have any unsaved edits yet, or you don’t have session snapshot enabled. Like I said before, if you don’t have any unsaved edits, the backup folder will be empty.
And you really need to read the FAQ I linked you to.
