I am getting an error message on trying to update Notepad++ from open documents. If I download it from https://notepad-plus-plus.org/downloads/ will it be the latest updated version without a need to update it?

Yes, the version at the official downloads site is always the most recent (and sometimes more recent than the ? > Update Notepad++ entry, because of the safety window between the initial release of a version and it being triggered for update).
