I've had to get rid of Notepad++ and I sad Help with BUG
-
Hello
I hope someone has a clue to this problem so I can use notepad++ again.
I’ve it for years on different laptops and never had a problem.
Three days ago, I started having issues trying to open .txt files. Not in notepad++. In notepad.
When I double click on the file or right click, it just goes round and round.
After hours of diagnosing and testing, I found that when I deleted notepad++, the files worked perfectly.
I also noticed I was 3 versions behind in updates and thought that might be the issue. So I downloaded the newest version and the same thing is happening.
I’ve now uninstalled notepd++ again the problem is fixed/
I’ve tested this several times and the outcome is the same.
But I work in notepad++ and use it for hours everyday.
I want it back, but I don’t know what to do and why this problem has just started after all these years.
I don’t very often install new programs and I have done so in probably a year so that is not the problem. No compatibility issues.
I use windows 10 bit 64.
Does anyone have any clue, please, as to what is going on and how can use notepad++ again?
thank you

If you want help, you’re going to have to be a bit more explicit. “It just goes round and round” is not sufficient for us to be able to understand your problem, let alone diagnose it or help you with it.
What do you do? What actually happens? What happens if you open Notepad++ first, then use File > Open instead of double-click? What does Windows think is the default application? What is your ?-menu’s Debug Info? etc, etc, etc.

Please try downloading a portable version:
Unzip that to a folder. Then open the folder and double-click the notepad++.exe file. That should open Notepad++. Try opening a file from File | Open. Then try opening a .txt file in regular Notepad and be sure that works.
If all that works, then we know what’s going wrong has something to do with the installer (edit to add: or corrupted user settings), not the program proper. That doesn’t (yet) solve your problem, but it will help figure out where to look next.
If you can’t run the portable version, or you can run the portable version but you can’t open a file, then that’s a different kind of problem.
Please report back and be as detailed as you can about what you did and what happened.
