Installation takes looooong time
-
Hi,
Since quite a while the new updates started to take long time to install. But the latest one 8.9.2 32 bit never completes. It gets stuck on installing nppshell.dll file. I have to kill the process to end the installation.
I’m running Win 11, 64 bit.
How to fix it?
Thanks -
@mr10008 ,
That’s weird. I know that last year, while Notepad++ and it’s associated installer and DLLs were self-signed, some AntiVirus software would pause/halt the installation. But that should have been fixed last year when Notepad++ moved to the new GlobalSign signature.
My only thought is that for whatever reason,
NppShell.dllis being write-protected while the rest of the installled executable and DLL and config files are not… which makes no sense to me, but maybe. If so, then I wonder if your taskbar shows the UAC icon (
) – if so, if you click on it, then Windows can ask you permission to let Notepad++ finish installing.I am doubtful it’s the UAC, however, so I had been hoping that @xomx would chime in by now, in case he had other ideas for a solution, or questions that he can ask for clarification (as he’s really good at issues with the installer).

@mr10008 ,
Update: your report might be related to https://github.com/notepad-plus-plus/notepad-plus-plus/issues/17308 – it might have to do with the installer calling
regsvr32.exe -

regsvr32.exeI’ve seen the installer stop on the same regsvr32.exe-step recently, perhaps even in the last few weeks.
The installer for sit there for at least two minutes or more before eventually completing. -

Thanks for your comments.
Looks like I got it fixed - I right-click on the installation file and run as administrator. Installation goes very quickly and the proper N++ context menu appears now.
