I am very confused about the Notepad++ security issue
-
Hi all,
Only today I heard about the security issue.
I can’t seem to find an answer for my 3 questions. I hope anyone can shed some light on it for me.
1 - How do I know if my system was affected by this?
2 - How do I clean the infection up if my system was affected by this?
3 - What might they have stolen from my PC?On the security side of my system.
I run Kaspersky Premium. Always have auto update turned on for Notepad++ and always let it update if it finds an update. I also have Windows auto updater on and it updates in the background.Regards,
Martin

Those that are worried “am I vulnerable” should really read the official announcement and this existing post and the replies after it, rather than ask a new question.
The first describes the problem, and the discussion in the second links to the “indicators of compromise” (ie, how to tell).
But please remember: as described in the official announcement, the malicious redirects were highly targeted. If you aren’t a prime candidate for being cyber-attacked by foreign actors already, the chances are, you weren’t.

See the FAQ, which has the best summary I can make, as of 2026-Feb-04; if new information is available, the FAQ will be updated. ALL followups/discussions must go in Topic: autoupdater and connection to temp.sh. This tangent is LOCKED.
