For years I've been struggling with displaying Eastern languages in Notepad++ while regular notepad displays them effortlessly. I would really like to finally get to the bottom of this.

Regular notepad can display Eastern languages using fonts like Arial, Lucia Console and Courier New but Notepad++ cannot.
In Notepad++ I’m restricted to a small list of less common (and much less desirable) fonts (with exception to Tahoma).
If I don’t want the backslash character to be replaced by the won character that list becomes even smaller.
If I want a monospaced font without display glitches that leaves me with pretty much one font: NSimSun, which is a pretty unpleasant font (hard on the eyes & brain, especially at font sizes below 16).
      And it gets worse:
Sometimes, even NSimSun inexplicably stops displaying Eastern languages properly, even though the global font settings have not been changed and the encoding is still set to UTF-8

Notepad Version: Many versions since I started using Notepad++ in 2010. Current version is 7.5.7
      OS: Windows XP Pro 32-bit

These references have some good info on “getting to the bottom of this” (I think…don’t really care as this doesn’t affect me):
