I always have loads of tabs open with loads of different files. And so far, they have always persisted. Even across reboots.

But now, suddenly while switching between windows with alt+tab, focusing on something else, and coming back to Notepad++, dozens of tabs disappeared. As if they never existed.

The machine was NOT rebooted, I was actively using it.

I am flabbergasted. I lost hours of work. What could possible have happened?

I have backup set to run every 7 seconds. Yet I see nothing in the backup folder to match my activity. Only 3 files from today. I worked on at least 10 actively this morning.

I don’t have an actual answer for you but I suspect you don’t fully understand the backup functions. Hence I would strongly suggest you read this FAQ post on the matter. It might help, but more importantly it will give a better understanding of the backup process.

All too many Notepad++ users have misunderstood this process and have lost data as a result.

You suggest that Notepad++ was running all the time. I would be wondering if some external process deleted the relevant files. I hope you can find something to recover.

Perhaps the process is at fault then?

No, it stems from the fact those backup files will refer to open tabs. No open tabs means no backup files.

As that FAQ post states, you should do your own backups so that you have “real” files, not rely solely on “temp tab” files for critical data.

You might wish to provide your Notepad++ setup. Read this FAQ post. That will give us some of that info. Any other information would also be welcome as it helps us get a better idea of the environment you are working in. Info such as, do you run multiple instances, was the backup location a local or network drive, or maybe cloud.

The more you can provide the better chance the members here might notice the reason for you problem. Whilst this may help you prevent a repeat, the original link I provided contains probably the best chance of you recovering some (or hopefully all) of your missing data.

              Good luck.
              Terry
