      Hi,

Question: How does one setup Notepad ++ to only insert a tab character in a line and not indent the entire body of text?

If you don’t have any text selected, and the “Language” preference for your file’s language does not have Replace by space ticked, pressing the Tab key should insert a tab character. Or maybe there is something I am misunderstanding here?

          Thanks.

Using simple TXT files. There is no language selection. What language should one select for TXT files, please?

For setting the tab settings, TXT would be under Tab Settings = normal

Are you facing this issue with text in a line longer than the available space in your Notepad++ window while the “Word wrap” (i.e. automatic line break) feature is turned on?

If so, go to (menu) Settings -> Preferences -> (register) Editing -> (group box) Line Wrap and select the Default item. After that only the beginning of the line where you typed the TAB character will be indented.

                    Thanks.

What you are sharing is not what I am seeing on this end. How does one share files such as screen snips on this forum, please?

you have to upload your pictures somewhere free, like imgur.com and post the markdown link here.

to display it inline, you have to put a ! in front of the markdown link created by imgur.

                      example: ![Imgur](https://i.imgur.com/xTPecNg.png)
                      will produce:

                      best regards.

Why didn’t you use the tab settings area of the prefs as your picture-posting tutorial?? :)

Something is off. I am using 7.6.6 64-bit.

Can someone please post a screen shot of their Notepad++ using this same version so I can see the correct tab setting for a TXT file to achieve this desired outcome?

Yes. The only change necessary on this end was Tab settings going from [Default] to normal.

The missing understanding was both the terminology where this setting was located from previous reply statements and the video of how different combinations come together.

                                I appreciate your kind assistance.

                                Thanks,
                                -SHD
