      Hi.
      Been using Notepad++ for years.
      Just upgraded to latest v8.4.6.
Currently using it for text file (*.txt).
Now, whenever I create a new line by typing text or even by hitting enter to drop down to a new line when no text has been entered, a distracting red vertical line appears in the left margin near the line numbers.
How do I get rid of this distracting red vertical line?
I feel like I must have inadvertently clicked some button by mistake, but I can’t seem to turn off these vertical red lines.
They are not in the document itself, but rather out in the gray left margin by the line numbers where you can click to put the blue circles, which I think are called bookmarks.
If I close the document and reopened it, the vertical red lines are gone. But they begin soon as I start typing again.
When I click the ‘Save’ button, the red lines turn green.
      Thanks for any insight.

        It’s called “Change History”.

Read this post, it shows the preference setting to change. You may want to reconsider though, it (for some) is a nice new feature.

          Thank-you, sir.
It does indeed look like a change history, and I was considering myself exactly what you suggest.
It can indeed by useful, I see.
But I still want to know how to turn it off if I want.

I’m going to leave it on for now.
Now that I know what it is and how to disable if I want, then it doesnt bother me like it did before.
            I love Notepad++.
            I use it every day.
Thanks to everybody involved in producing such an excellent piece of software.
This is the first question I had to ask here.

I should’ve read the change log.
              My bad.

You’re right. This is a useful new feature.
I just didnt know what why those red lines were appearing.

And that’s the main issue I have with the way these appear. Turning them on and confronting users doesn’t appear to work very well. Most users have a negative reaction to that and then can’t get over the fact that it may actually be useful.

But how otherwise to present these new features, that’s the dilemma.

I see exactly what you are saying.
                    There’s no easy solution.
But now I am glad that I know.
And I am glad to have this cool feature.

I remember seeing a simply thing in MS Word that a friend turned me onto.
And I thought, “This is cool.”

When I searched for relevant terms, such as Notepad++ vertical red lines, I found info about folding lines, which threw me off the trail.

The best thing to have done would have been to not make change-history optional, i.e., not have had a way to turn it off. Then all these people asking how to turn it off would suddenly forget all that nonsense and have an epiphany about how valuable a feature it is, just like dear old @Dad did. :-)

                            Ouch!

I can see where you are going, but don’t like the road you are taking!

Each to their own I guess. The developer is never going to please ALL the people ALL of the time.

But I will need to chg the color because red is warning. Red is bad. Red is stop. You know.
It’s a mind-trigger of sorts that can startle you if you don’t know why it’s there.

Well, actually most users seem to refer to it as being orange. But regardless, this feature seems to come from the underlying code of Scintilla, upon which Notepad++ is built upon, see this post.

So it might not be possible to do any more than just turn it on or off. So far no-one has mentioned anything about changing colour by using the dark mode theme’s either.

So if you wanted to have more control I suggest you read the FAQ post, feature request or bug report, or you could post in the link I referred to above, since it directly relates to that new feature.

Well, it is good that changes are not shown in red then…they are orange.

Colors aren’t configurable yet; I presume that will be coming in a future release.

You are very evangelical for this feature, but I would suggest that it is not YET that valuable. It’s a visual marker only with no hotkeys to find next/prev change. Having a marker thousands of line away with no easy way to find it is useless for me.

I turned it off immediately because I have Michael VIncent’s ChangedLines plugin installed. It provides hotkeys and more than that, a changed lines panel. The new native function does seem to provide more (unchangeable) colors, but knowing the change location is more important. You yourself have recommended the ChangedLines plugin in the past.

ChangedLines at Github still works fine in n++ 8.4.6.
I used Location Navigate for a long time and switched to ChangedLines for the panel.

Hopefully the native function will grow in features…

I upgraded to Win 11 yesterday, too, btw.
Took long time. Maybe an hour or more.
But everything seems to have gone without hitch.
Normally there are glitches need resolving. But I see none.
                                          Not yet.

Yes, it is a must-have feature for a text editor.

True, but as I’ve said a few times, other sub-features will be added. Things take time. It is good maybe to move a bit slower–change history is very new to Notepad++'s editing component Scintilla, and as such, some issues have been discovered.
