I would like to back the complaint by @bendover22, which is locked, so I cannot react there.

He rightly complains that N++ assumes that everyone has a bl**** FB, Twitter, or Google account.
(and I don’t even mention GitHub, whose logo must be one of the obscurest in internet history. I can’t recall having seen it ever before!)

      So indeed, I couldn’t agree more with @bendover22 !
It is absolutely ridiculous that it takes an account on another platform to be able to register here.
And even if there were some bizarre rationale to do so, it wouldn’t harm either to explain this “procedure” in the FAQ, or by a pop-up or sth. when one clicks the login field.

If it weren’t for this message by @bendover22 more than 3 years ago, I would still be looking how to access the N++ forum!!

Futhermore, it is telling that no N++ administrator even bothered to react to the caveat from @bendover22.
This is more the kind of behaviour to be expected from MS, about which users complain all over the web.
And which only illustrates that MS couldn’t care less, for they know what is good for you.

Why on earth does N++ insist on it being a toy for insiders only?

        “bloody” ?
        You could’ve said that.

it wouldn’t harm either to explain this “procedure” in the FAQ

By the time people can see the FAQ, they’re already “in” and probably don’t care so much anymore.

or by a pop-up or sth. when one clicks the login field.

The website used for this forum is not developed or maintained by Notepad++ personnel.
It is merely a tool used.
        Thus there is limited configurability.

…I would still be looking how to access the N++ forum!!

It really isn’t that hard to figure out.

Why on earth does N++ insist on it being a toy for insiders only?

        Interesting perspective.

I’m sure Peter Jones will come along with his almost-FAQ-boilerplate to explain why the forum login works as it does.

You can actually look at the FAQs without logging in.

I’ll just link to last week’s discussion, Logging in to Notepad++ Community, where I responded with the near-boilerplate for login reasoning. :-)

And the only people who I’ve come across that have neither a FB nor a Twitter nor a Google account are either those that complain about logging in here, or people who are very likely to have a GitHub account, or people who would never need to login here. (I am mildly surprised that there isn’t a “login with AppleID” or equivalent… but since I cannot recall having seen that anywhere in my internet travels, I am guessing that Apple/IOS just doesn’t provide that service; which is odd, because I’d think with the mobile userbase fractured between IOS and Android that Apple would want to be in that game like Google is. But Apple isn’t known for playing well with others, so…)

no N++ administrator even bothered to react

Indeed, that thread was ignored at the time. Probably because Don, the sole administrator of the Forum, doesn’t frequent here much, except when he has an announcement to post; and, as far as we can tell, he rarely reads any post but replies to those announcements. There is at least one active user here (@guy038) who has “moderator” powers on the forum, but he cannot make configuration / behind the scenes changes.

But you will notice, in last week’s discussion, that I asked Guy to ask Don to make a change to the login page, and Don actually got involved. He has asked the Forum-providers for help; hopefully, that page will be clarified and it will no longer say “Alternative Login”. But I can virtually guarantee that we’re not going to go back to self-hosting passwords, because that’s a security nightmare.

            @PeterJones

I had noticed that it is possible to read FAQs and threads without being logged in. And that’s not what I commented about either.
But occasionally a newbie wants to post a question to the combined knowledge of a Forum, simply because he’s stuck, and cannot seem to find an answer.

As the first thread I stumbled upon when looking how to log in, was the complaint by @bendover22 which never got a reply, it’s easy to conclude for new visitors that no-one bothers, as all members already know the drill.
It’s not more explained that the sole admin has more important things to do :-), than it is how one should go about to log in.
Which is the point I was making in my message.

At any rate, all this would have been avoided if either I had found that interesting "Logging in to Notepad++ Community thread first, or if that thread had been summarized in a couple of lines in the FAQ.
At least, “Available logins” would be an improvement, though the context as you sketch it, also has its importance.

              Okay, now it’s not almost-FAQ.
